What's Included in a Full Car Detailing Package? (Interior + Exterior Checklist)

“Car detailing” gets used loosely. Some shops mean a slightly better wash, others mean a full multi-hour correction process. Here’s what a genuinely complete detailing package should include, so you can compare quotes properly.

Exterior detailing checklist

• 3-step compound polish: cutting compound to remove oxidation and light scratches, a finishing polish to refine the surface, and pad polishing to bring out gloss. Skipping any of these three steps leaves visible haze or missed correction.
• Tyre dressing: a proper gel dressing, not a quick spray, so the tyres stay glossy for days rather than hours.
• Plastic and trim restoration: faded black trim around windows, mirrors and bumpers gets a restorer treatment to bring back the original dark finish instead of looking grey and sun-bleached.
• Wheel and rim deep clean: brake dust and grime removed from behind the spokes, not just the visible face.

Interior detailing checklist

• Dashboard and console: cleaned and UV-protected, not just wiped with a damp cloth
• Carpets and floor mats: vacuumed and shampooed where needed
• Seats: fabric shampoo or leather clean-and-condition depending on material
• Roof lining: wiped down, a step many quick washes skip entirely
• Engine bay: degreased and dressed
• Trunk: vacuumed and wiped, including the spare wheel well

If a quote is missing several of these, especially the engine bay, roof lining and trunk, it’s a wash-and-vacuum being marketed as a detail, not a full detailing service.

Detailing vs washing vs ceramic coating

• Wash: removes surface dirt for a fresh look, done in 30 to 45 minutes
• Detailing: corrects and restores (polishing, trim dressing, full interior clean), done in 2 to 4 hours
• Ceramic coating: adds long-term chemical and UV protection on top of a properly detailed, polished surface
